What's new on Scrimba?

Scrimba shipped a run of changes through 2026: Scrimba Explain moved from open beta to fixed monthly quotas, Learn Python was rebuilt with a new teacher, and the Backend Developer Path left beta. AI Instant Feedback landed on challenges, React 19 coverage arrived in its own course, and Bootcamp projects now run on real Git and GitHub workflows.

Seen by 21 September 2026​

  • Plans: Scrimba's launch articles in August described Scrimba Explain as "free during open beta". By 20 September the docs limits page instead sets fixed quotas: a free account gets 10 explainers for life, Pro gets 100 a month. Follow-ups and Go deeper each count as one; drafts from ChatGPT or a coding agent stay free until claimed. Scrimba has not published a date for the change.
  • Feature: An EXPLAIN button in the header of every scrim sends the lesson, your highlighted code and the teacher's transcript to Explain, so you can ask about the code in front of you without leaving the lesson. Scrimba's docs describe the button but do not say when it shipped.
  • Catalog: Intro to Model Context Protocol gained four AI-generated explainer scrims in September 2026, each 75 to 90 seconds with a quiz and the line "Explain is AI and can make mistakes".
  • Integrations: The "Explain by Scrimba" Chrome extension turns the page you are reading into an explainer; the @Explain app inside ChatGPT returns answers as video; Claude Code, Codex and any MCP agent can build explainers from a repository through Scrimba's MCP endpoint. Scrimba's docs describe all three but do not date them.

August 2026​

  • Course relaunch: Learn Python was replaced at the same URL by a 4.1 hour course from Treasure Porth built around three terminal apps. It covers less than Olof Paulson's 5.6 hour course it replaced, which stays online at a separate URL as "the old course".
  • Launch: Scrimba Explain went public on Product Hunt on 13 August 2026. Type a question, attach a document, or point it at your code and it builds a narrated video with diagrams and a quiz. Our tested review covers what it is good at.

Early 2026​

  • Course update: What's New in React 19 covers the newest React 19 patterns (Server Components, Actions, the use hook). These live in that dedicated course rather than in the foundational Learn React.
  • Feature: Bootcamp group projects use Git and GitHub (branching, pull requests, code review), so you practice a real team workflow.

Late 2025​

Early 2025​

  • New Feature: AI-powered Instant Feedback on challenges launched in February 2025, giving you hints when you're stuck. In a course these scrims carry a "Challenge with Instant Feedback" icon; Learn Next.js now has 80 of them.

2024​

  • Feature: The Scrimba 2.0 editor shipped in July 2024, with major performance improvements over the original platform.
